"Talking" defect detector on the KCS-East St. Louis Sub         
"Talking" defect detector on the KCS-East St. Louis Sub at milepost 272.7, near the Pontoon Road crossing in Granite City, IL. This detector gives the total number of axles, the train's speed in MPH, the ambient air temperature, and tells whether or not it has any defects, such as a hot box. The radio signal transmitted by the detector is about 5 watts, and can be heard for about 5 miles.
